Wintertime can be so grey and dreary so why not brighten things up a little with some super funky coloured tights. They keep your pins warm and they brighten your day – a perfect combination!
If you don’t feel like being bold and exposing your colour clad legs in a short skirt you can still add a splash a colour to your wardrobe by wearing some cheeky socks or knee-highs just peeping out from under your trousers. Or go for some lovely autumnal tones to keep things sedate. On the other hand if you want to be bold and really make a statement wear some of the really bright colours you can get or even patterned tights.
You can get all sorts of patterned tights from tartan to stripes to screen print to comic book tights! Let’s just say there are some more tasteful patterns out there than others but there are certainly lots to choose from.
If you’re more a standard block-colour tights lover you can get every colour of the rainbow and more and they come in all sorts of materials. You can get sheer coloured tights and opaque coloured tights – I think if you are going to wear colours and make a statement go opaque. They also keep your legs warmer and there’s nothing worse than looking good but feeling chilly!
If you’re not a fan of traditional tights with feet you can also get footless coloured tights and cropped footless tights so they feel more like leggings but fit snugly. They come in all colours – red, purple, blue, turquoise, yellow, black, brown, etc. but they mostly have fancy names like chocolate, cerise, strawberry, damson, jade, etc. Just think fruits and you’ll probably find the colour you want! Some even have lace on the bottom if you’re not wearing them tucked in boots and want to show a bit of ankle. Footless coloured tights are great for autumn or springtime when the weather isn’t as cold as mid-winter and you can wear them under a short skirt with flat ballet pump shoes.
If you prefer to stick to good old fashioned tights with feet you can get silky ones, shiny ones, matte ones, woollen ones, ribbed ones, cashmere ones, just about any kind of coloured tights. Some are more expensive than others of course, depending on the material and it all comes down to personal taste and what you find the most comfortable. As they sit right next to your skin and almost become like a second skin they are probably the most important item of clothing to be comfortable.
Some of my favourites are Trasparenze Gennifer Merino wool tights as they feel gorgeously luxurious and come in the most beautiful colours, such as Rubino (or red to us mere mortals!). Pretty Polly still also makes some great tights, including their Nanopaque tights, which come in four gorgeous colours, my absolute favourite being mulberry. They have loads of stretch and are really comfortable and warm but they look divine. They probably get my vote as the best 40 denier, opaque, matte, reasonably priced tights this season and with such a great name and packaging you can’t go wrong.
If you are looking for something a little thicker or a little glossier go for Emilio Cavallini’s 200 denier Glossy tights, available in a variety of lush, autumn shades including Brown Wood, Honey and Ribbon Red. They look and feel rich and gorgeous and they are still reasonably priced so it won’t break the bank when you end buying every colour.
